A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of files, that are distributed over the Internet for playback on smart phones, portable media players and personal computers.

Quite simply, a podcast is a collection of files residing at a unique web address. These are usually audio files, such as MP3; although video files are also used in services such as a SuiteTalk Vmail, or a BBC Vodcast.

People can "subscribe" to this podcast feed by submitting the web address to an 'aggregator' - software that runs on the consumer's computer, such as PodNova, iTunes or NewsGator. When new "episodes" of the podcast become available, they are automatically downloaded to that user's computer.

Unlike radio or streaming content on the web, podcasts are not real-time. The material is pre-recorded and users can check out the material at their leisure, offline.

Although podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically, using an aggregator or feed reader capable of reading feed formats such as RSS.

Currently, millions of people world-wide subscribe to podcasts, a figure that is growing exponentially year-on-year and is predicted to top 60 million within 3 years.
